Keith D. Lowey, CPA, CFF, CIRA

Principal

Keith has been a principal of Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. since joining the firm in 1990, and has served in both the public and private sector in the accounting field since 1983. He has extensive experience in accounting, tax and business transactions, business advisory services, and has been engaged regularly as an interim CEO/CFO, fiduciary, financial advisor, bankruptcy estate representative, trustee, Debtor’s and Committee’s accountant in hundreds of matters, and as a court-appointed Examiner in connection with complex business litigation. Keith is regularly retained by operating businesses to provide CFO services. He has extensive experience in family office settings and has been instrumental in the Firm’s evolution across a wide spectrum of enterprises.   He has co-authored articles and is a regular speaker at seminars on business transactions, reorganizations, and Financial Reporting. Prior to joining Verdolino & Lowey, Keith was employed as the Controller and Chief Financial Officer of Stadium Management Corporation (Sullivan Stadium) and at Arthur Andersen & Co. as a senior Auditor. Keith is a licensed CPA in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Certified in Financial Forensics, a Certified Insolvency & Restructuring Advisor, and a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy. Keith received his Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from Bentley College in 1983.

Craig R. Jalbert, CIRA

Principal

Craig joined Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. as a Principal in 1987.  He has extensive experience in accounting and consulting services; business advisory services; tax planning and compliance; litigation support; forensic accounting and bankruptcy matters including: taxation and accounting; valuation and insolvency; preference and fraudulent transactions; plan development; cash flow and business analysis; records reconstruction; post-confirmation trustee/administrator; wind-down services; and expert reporting. Craig has been involved in over 7,000 bankruptcy cases, including approximately 500 Chapter 11 cases since 1990.  Craig has regularly been appointed as both a Federal and State Court Receiver, Trustee, as well as multiple C-Level Executive titles; is frequently invited to speak on matters of insolvency and bankruptcy taxation; and, was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy on March 15, 2013. Prior to joining Verdolino & Lowey, Craig was a senior auditor with Arthur Andersen & Co. in the Commercial Audit Division of the Boston office.  Craig received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy with honors from Boston College in 1983 and is a Certified Insolvency Restructuring Advisor.

William T. Hurley, Jr., JD, CPA

Managing Director

Bill joined the firm in September 2010 as a managing director. He has more than 32 years of public accounting experience. His work experience includes working with entrepreneurial businesses on tax and business issues, corporate reorganizations, the purchase and sale of closely-held businesses, partnership taxation issues, international tax planning and estate planning for high net worth individuals. Prior to 2010, Bill was a shareholder and director of tax services at G. T. Reilly & Company, CPA’S in Milton, MA.  He is active in numerous professional and community organizations and frequently is asked to speak on tax and financial planning issues and has also appeared on several radio programs in the Boston area regarding tax and business issues. Bill is a former License Commissioner for the City of Taunton, MA.  He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Bentley University in May 1977, and a Juris Doctor Degree from Suffolk University Law School in June 1987.  Bill is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Emily Abate, Sr. Associate

Emily joined Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. in 2015 upon her graduation from The University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.  Her main focus is on bankruptcy-related work which includes: claims analysis, preference and avoidance action analyses. Emily also assists with wind-down and liquidation projects. Both in and outside of the bankruptcy arena, she assists with fraud investigations, financial accounting and reporting, budgeting, and cash flow analysis.  She often assists with special projects pertaining to reconciliation of disorganized books and records as well as preservation of electronic financial data.

Thomas C. Bailey, JD

Senior Consultant/General Counsel

Thomas joined the firm in October of 2008 as a senior consultant and general counsel. He has extensive experience in financial statement analysis of closely held businesses, real estate development and zoning matters, commercial loan transactions, business law, asset identification and fraudulent transaction evaluation.  His experience also includes examination of private placement tax shelters and matters of public offerings and compliance. Prior to 2008, Thomas was a principal and managing partner at Klieman, Lyons, Schindler & Gross, in Boston, MA, where he provided planning and advisory services to businesses, individuals, charitable organizations and partnerships. Thomas received his JD in 1979 from Suffolk University School of Law, and his Bachelor of Arts in Economics cum laude in 1976 from Boston University.  He is a member of the Massachusetts and Boston Bar Associations.

Mary Jo Schindler Bailey Manager  

Mary Jo joined Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. in 2007 as a member of the bankruptcy and business consulting team, working as an analyst and project manager with efforts primarily focused on case-specific analysis and administration, wind-down and liquidation projects. Prior to joining Verdolino & Lowey, Mary Jo managed an established law practice, and was employed as a portfolio cash manager for Keystone Custodian Funds, Inc. where she was responsible for the daily investment of short-term money market portfolios and institutional bank funds; trading short term securities, municipal and US Treasury bonds for same day settlement; and creating and implementing strategies for maximizing yield with liquidity.  Mary Jo began her professional career working for the Office of the District Attorney in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, where she supported all Assistant District Attorneys with arraignments, bail reviews, and trial preparation.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University in 1980.

Penny Bley Computer Analyst & Forensic Bookkeeper

Penny joined the firm in November of 1999 bringing over 20 years of accounting experience from various positions in the accounting field as well as that of a controller.  She specializes in data gathering, analysis and database creation including forensic bookkeeping, compilation of budgets and projections, review and/or preparation of Operating Reports, preference analysis, claims analysis, financial reporting for both Political and High Net Worth clients, drafting of financial statements, advising  colleagues working on payroll matters, reconciling disorganized books and records, and instructing on records retention, as well as regularly engaging in  special project assignments for the Principals including solvency analyses and other litigation support matters. Penny attended Morris County Community College and has attended numerous expert training courses for both hardware and software applications.

Beth Brodeur, EA

Tax Supervisor

Beth, an Enrolled Agent, has been employed with Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. since July 2003.  Prior to joining the firm, she had five years of previous general accounting experience.  Beth prepares and reviews individual, corporate, partnership, trust and estate tax returns.  Her current duties include working on engagements of both bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy clients.  Her experience and expertise include tax and business planning for large multi-state and consolidated businesses; tax planning for high-net-worth individuals; international tax compliance; and estate and trust administration.  Beth received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a major in accounting, from Bryant College.

Klodiana Callahan, Accounting, Bookkeeping and Payroll Services

Klodiana has been employed at Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. since December 2000, working largely as a bookkeeper and staff accountant. Klodiana primarily works with specific clients, to whom she provides a wide range of administrative services, with a dedicated focus on client goals and back-office administration. A sampling of these services is processing payroll and payroll taxes as well as filing sales tax reports, administering client bill pay, maintaining monthly bank reconciliations, administering document management, and the drafting of operating reports and other financial reports as needed. In addition, Klodiana provides start up services to non-profit organizations. Prior to joining V&L, Klodiana worked in the accounting field outside of the U.S.  Klodiana received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Tirana University in Albania.

Mark W. Carrison

Tax Supervisor

Mark joined the firm in January 2020 and has more than 15 years of public accounting experience.  Mark provides accounting and advisory services in tax, accounting, financial reporting, and consulting services for individuals, privately held companies, and trusts.  Mark is a member of the Rhode Island Society of Certified Public Accountants and Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.  He has had active roles on numerous not-for-profit boards in Rhode Island and Massachusetts including Treasurer and Board of Director of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, Boy Scouts of America, and Rhode Island Wild Plant Society.  Mark received a Bachelor of Science degree from Bryant University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Saint Leo University in Accounting with a Fraud Examination concentration.

Renee Cotnoir, Sr. Associate

Renee joined Verdolino & Lowey in September of 2013 as a research assistant in the bankruptcy department.  She is primarily involved in bankruptcy related work as well as wind-down and liquidation projects.  Renee is a primary contact for outside parties in various bankruptcy and liquidation matters.  She works on matters such as: drafting operating reports, closing payroll & sales tax accounts, detailed data entry tasks in connection with preference and claims analyses, records inventory & review, as well as various project specific detail-oriented tasks.   She also assists with data entry and review for forensic analyses for corporate and personal clients. Renee is involved in 401(k) and retirement plan administration and terminations.  She has assisted the political department with various tasks such as: paying credit card bills, accounting for and depositing campaign contributions.  Renee received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Rhode Island College in 2010.

Matthew R. Flynn, CPA, CFF, CIRA

Manager

Matthew joined Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. in 1999 and is a department manager central to the successful operation of V&L’s bankruptcy area.  He specializes in bankruptcy-related work, including promulgation of debtor schedules and statements of financial affairs; fraud investigations both in and outside of the bankruptcy arena; preference and avoidance action analyses, claims analyses and preparation of Ch. 11 operating reports.  Matthew regularly assumes the lead role in high profile cases across all disciplines with responsibilities which can include forensic accounting; business liquidations; litigation support; records reconstruction; financial accounting and reporting; budgeting; and cash flow analysis.  Matthew graduated from Saint Anselm College, and has been a CPA since 2003, received his Certification in Financial Forensics in 2008, and became a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor in December 2012.

Cherie Grover

Analyst

Cherie has been employed at Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. since 2000. Cherie is a senior and vital member of the team focused on campaign finance reporting, and provides accounting, administrative, operational and compliance services for political candidates as well as political action committees. Prior to joining the Firm, Cherie was a teacher in the Massachusetts public school system.  Cherie graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Arts and Sciences from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1999.

Laurie Lafave

Analyst

Laurie has been employed by Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. since October 2005.  Laurie’s primary duties within the bankruptcy department include 401(k) and retirement plan administration and termination, with responsibilities comprised of the following tasks: review of Plan documents, analysis of 401(k) deposit compliance and Plan testing, due diligence required for benefit withdrawal paperwork, review and/or preparation of Form 5500 returns and assisting the bankruptcy trustee with filing of same, communications with plan participants as necessary, as well as research and assisting ERISA attorneys with Plan compliance corrections as needed. She has handled the termination of close to 130 plans over the past twelve years.  Laurie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth in 1992.

Laurie Leonard

Manager

Laurie joined the firm in 2016 with more than 25 years of corporate accounting experience which includes reporting and compliance, operational accounting, and project management. Laurie received her Bachelor of Science in Business from State University of New York at Albany and has an MBA from Northeastern University . Her current responsibilities include managing the Campaign Finance Services Department as well as the Family Office Accounting Service Department for high-net-worth individuals and various other business clients.

Tim McDonald, EnCE, MCSE Director of IT

Tim joined the firm in October 2012 as a Computer Forensic Examiner/Systems Analyst. His current duties involve handling eDiscovery, computer forensics, and data recovery-related cases. He also manages the IT Department at the firm and handles network security and assists in systems administration. Tim graduated from Excelsior College with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems and holds the following certifications: EnCase Certified Examiner, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, and Microsoft Certified Professional. Tim is also a Licensed Private Investigator in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Heather Medeiros, CPA, MST

Tax Director

Heather, a Certified Public Accountant, has been employed with Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. since June 1998 and is responsible for running the day-to-day activities of the Tax Department.  Heather prepares and reviews individual, corporate, partnership, trust, and non-profit tax returns.  Her current duties include working on engagements of both bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy clients.  Her experience and expertise include tax and business planning for large multi-state and consolidated businesses; tax planning for high-net-worth individuals; international tax compliance; and non-profit compliance.  Heather received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a major in Accounting from Framingham State College and her Master of Science in Taxation from the University of Cincinnatti.

Brian Prete,

Accountant and Department Manager

Brian joined Verdolino & Lowey in September of 2016.  He works primarily with the Family Office Team, working on customized family office solutions, general accounting, record keeping and bill paying; cash flow planning; investment and financial reporting; family office software selection and implementation; and facilitating family wide communication as well as interaction between family financial advisors, to help ensure effective and coordinated efforts. Brian’s primary duties include a focus on financial reporting and special project reporting for these high net-worth individuals and family offices, as well as partnership accounting for limited partnership investment vehicles and alternative assets. He assists with overseeing the aggregation and accounting of client investment funds and calculation of investment performance metrics. Brian received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Rhode Island in 2014.

Don Swanson, MBA, CFE, CIRA

Manager

Don joined Verdolino & Lowey, P.C. in December 2000.  He provides lead bankruptcy, restructuring and forensic accounting advisory services to financially troubled companies, bankruptcy trustees, and other stakeholders in bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy matters. Don has broad experience with financial systems and electronic general ledger programs and has provided litigation support, financial forensic reviews, and insolvency restructuring advisory services across a wide range of engagements. Prior to joining the firm, Don held management positions in corporate finance and accounting in the manufacturing and high-tech industries for seventeen years, including responsibilities for division budget and financial planning and reporting management in large public corporations and as serving as controller and executive committee member for a privately held manufacturing company. Don earned his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Hartford. He is a Certified Insolvency Restructuring Advisor and Certified Fraud Examiner and a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute.

Matthew Whitehouse

Tax Supervisor

Matthew joined the firm in September 2008.  He has nine years of bankruptcy and litigation support experience providing project-based research and analysis with the fraud investigation team.  Matthew transitioned to the tax department in 2013, where he prepares individual, corporate, partnership and trust tax returns, including both bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy.  He is also involved in tax planning, tax litigation and research projects and is the tax department’s point person relative to various software programs.  Matthew received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting, magna cum laude, from the University of Rhode Island in May 2007 and his Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Rhode Island in December 2009.
